Preliminary Task Evaluation

Evaluation:

What have you learnt during the filming process?

Camera angles

During the filming process, I have made sure to implement numerous different camera and filming angles into the piece that have allowed it to work and flow well. These different shots have included: Shot/Reverse shot; over the shoulder shot; Establishing shots and the use of the 180 degree rule. These were all implemented into the piece and I feel as if they all allowed the end product to come together well. During the filming process, close up shots, medium close up shots and mid shots were used in order to build tension and then break that tension with awkward conversation filmed using over the shoulder shots. During the whole process, I learnt about a variety of camera angles that could be used to add diversity and keep the viewers entertained to the piece itself.

Premiere Pro (Editing)

I found that the editing process went fairly well and allowed for a good final video to be created. In editing, I used many different techniques including jump cuts and cross cuts that allowed my final edit to work well and for the storyline within it to flow. As well as this, I was able to place music within the edit to enhance the intensity of the storyline itself through the use of premiere pro. Match on action was also used in an attempt to add variety and dynamism to the edit and make it interesting for the viewer to watch. I learned, whilst editing, how to use the editing tools within Premiere itself and how to implement different types of colour grading (enhancing brightness, contrast etc) into the final edit.

Working as a group

Working as a group, I felt, went well. We were all able to understand and implement each others ideas into filming and how we would implement those same ideas within editing also. Each member of the group was able to have specific jobs during the filming process and each of us had an opportunity to carry out different rolls within the group e.g. filming, taking photos of the filming process etc. However, I found that we had small disagreements very rarely but we managed to overcome these quickly and easily.

The process of filming

The filming process itself went well. As a group, we were all able to implement our ideas of shots and angles that we were able to film and how we could film them in ways that would make the final edit as perfect as we possibly wanted it. I feel as if the filming process was quick and efficient as we managed to film the piece over a 2 hour period split over the two lessons that it took. We had completed filming quickly and had the interesting and diverse shots that we needed that we felt would work best within the final edit.

Mistakes and overcoming them

Successes

Overall, I feel as if there were many successes within our final edit. I feel as if the shots we used were perfect for how we wanted the final piece to turn out and I feel as if the editing enhanced this and allowed the final piece to look as good as we imagined it. In my opinion, most of the aspects of the process were successes other than the few mistakes we made that I have stated before.

Script

Script:

During the brainstorming process for ideas and the creation of the idea that we were going to implement into our piece, we required a script for one of the last scenes; this is shown below.

 Actor 1: Will Dallison
Actor 2: Sam Claxton

(Actor 1 bursts through the door and into the office of Actor 2 where he appears to be working)

Actor 1: I've been looking for you everywhere.

Actor 2: Oh okay, why? (Confused)

Actor 1: well, I've been told that you.. (phone rings) .. give me a second (pulls phone out of pocket and shot changes to an over the shoulder shot of the phone that reads "Mummy is calling")

Actor 1: (under his breath) oh for..  (answers phone)

Actor 1: yep, alright make it quick. yep, yeah I'll have chicken dippers for dinner. Yes... YES, alright, okay, yep, 'kay, bye, love you (Hangs up the phone and places it back in his pocket)

(The two sit in silence for a moment, still looking at each other)

Actor 2: Everything alright?

(actor 1 pulls his hood down, steps forward and grabs actor 2 by the neck)

Actor 1: you're lucky, I'll leave this for next time.

(Actor 2 walks out of shot and the audience hear the door slam behind him, Actor 1 stays bewildered at the recent events and slowly turns back towards his computer as the scene fades to black)

Music Ideas

Music Ideas:

During the creation of the preliminary task; as a group, we toyed with many ideas of music that we could use within the piece.

Below are a selection that we chose from.

We wanted to build an atmosphere of intensity and threatening power, broken up by comedic silences and we chose songs accordingly.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the final cut, we have decided to use Skrillex - Bangarang as we felt it would keep the audience excited and ready to witness the events that would unfold throughout the rest of the piece.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sound effects:
During the piece, we required two sound effects that would really tie the piece together, these are shown below.

Preliminary task

Rough ideas for Preliminary Task:

  • Kidnapping - Threatening, Guns
  • Scary horror scene - creepy hallways
  • Bullying
  • Awkward Lunch with a work colleague
  • Intense build up of actor walking through numerous corridors backed by intense music whilst a second actor is sat silently in a classroom, the scene quickly becomes intense to awkward and comedic.

Plan for official shoot:

  • Begins with an establishing shot of outside sixth form building
  • Cuts immediately to a close up shot of double doors that stay still and silent for a few seconds, only to be broken by Actor 1 bursting through them.
  • Some form of intense music will begin as he does this
  • Another intense shot of Actor 1 walking through corridors as intense music continues.
  • Music stops as the scene cuts to a shot of Actor 2 sat silently in a room, completing some work etc.
  • Music begins again as another intense shot of Actor 1 bursting through doors attempting to find Actor 2 is cut to.
  • Intense scenes of Actor 1 searching for his hostage continue with intense music but are split up by scenes with no music showcasing Actor 2 sat silently in a room working.
  • Actor 1 finally enters the correct room and dialogue with Actor 2 begins. (See Script)

Actor 1: (under his breath) oh for.. sake.. (answers phone)
Actor 1: Hello? Oh mum, for gods sake I'm in the middle of something pretty important, okay super quick
(Stays silent for a second)
Actor 1: (Under his breath and close to the phone) Yes I'd like some chicken dippers put in the oven for my dinner
Actor 1: (Louder and more manly) Alright, yep, okay, yep, thank you for that, love you too mummy (ends call)

Introduction

        My name is Sam Claxton.

I chose AS Media because I've generally always been interested in viewing and having the opportunity of creating my own media.

As well as Media, I'm studying Psychology and Computing.

I enjoy listening to a majority of music. I enjoy listening to a range of music types; Rap, Indie and a selection of Electronic Music tracks.  Tyler the creator, Arctic Monkeys, Mac Miller, OCD: Moosh & Twist, Childish Gambino, One Republic and Hoodie Allen are just a selection of these and I've embedded a selection of my favourite songs from these artists below.

I enjoy watching films regularly and obviously, I've got my favourites, these would have to include; Pulp Fiction, The Avengers, Superbad and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Pulp Fiction ft. John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson

I don't often read magazines but when it comes to websites, I'm constantly scrolling through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. A lot of people would say that I'm addicted to social networking sites and that statement is probably accurate.
